TPS Scoring System

We need to talk about your TPS reports

Behind the Coversheet

Creating our TPS Reports is a complicated process. We carefully select a group of the most respected cigar bloggers and magazines, assign scores to their reviews of a single cigar (vitola not withstanding), and apply an average to summarize the consensus of their opinions. Standard deviation is applied to the scores and outliers removed. The result is a single number that captures the substance of reviewers sentiment in one place, the TPS Report.

How to read a TPS Report

TPS Report Scores range from 0-10, with higher scores indicating better overall reviews. We highlight TPS Report Scores in colors of various shade so that you can instantly compare: dark green to light green for favorable reviews, yellow scores for mixed reviews, and red to orange for unfavorable reviews.

Aahh, now, are you going to go ahead and have those TPS reports for us this afternoon?

Each cigar featured on The People’s Stogie gets a TPS Report when we’ve collected at least three critics’ reviews. We do not count user scores into the TPS Scores. While we solicit scores from our site visitors on cigars, we do not include those votes in the TPS Report. The average user score is completely separate and is purely calculated by registered users of the site. If a single site or publication publishes multiple reviews of the same cigar, those scores are averaged together and contribute only one total score to the TPS’s average.

Conversion Chart

Below is the current list of sites/magazines that we use to calculate TPS reports. Every site has their own rating systems for cigars and an 89 on one site does not necessarily equal an 89 on another, and not every site even gives an overall score, so we have to interpret the overall tone of their results, so we have converted each sites score into a standard number for our purposes that we use when calculating the TPS Score.
